What do I Tell my Children?

What do I tell my children when they speak of a polar bear
What do I tell my children when the tree frog is not there
What do I tell my children when the dust storm fills the sky
Their innocent, and inquisitive minds make them seek the reasons why.

And what do I tell my children when the coral reef is white
What do I tell my children when the whale gives up the fight
And what do I tell my children when mothers cry in Palestine
I smile and rest my hand on them and say that everything is fine.

And what do I tell my children when they see an Eternal Flame
What do I tell my children when today they see the same
What do I tell my children when they hear of the fur seal’s plight
I admit to them that things are wrong, but soon will be all right.

And what do I tell my children when there’s oil along the shore
What do I tell my children when the tiger roars no more
What do I tell my children when the baby can sense no mirth
I say to them with saddened heart, “There is a problem with the Earth.”

And what do I tell my children when all the forests disappear
What do I tell my children when the Inuit sheds a tear
And what do I tell my children at the time the landmines maim
“This world will be yours one day,” and I hang my head in shame.
